The ref. CK2998 Omega Speedmaster replaced the CK2915 in 1959. The two main characteristics of this model -the black bezel and the Alpha hands- were however already to be found on the latest generation of its predecessor: the CK2915-3.
Although official certification by NASA would take another few years, it must be noted that the CK2998 was in fact the first Speedmaster to be worn in space: it was Wally Schirra's personal watch on the Sigma 7 mission in October 1962. As such, it stood model for the 2012 'First Omega in Space' numbered edition.
