The Rose centifolia– a beauty with countless petals – stems from extensive crossbreeding between wild varieties from the Caucasus and Iran. It is also appreciated by devotees of flowering plants for its abundant fragrant flower production. The rose on the dial of this model has been “plucked” at the heart of a densely flowered bush on the original plate and drawn by Thornton himself who, although a medical doctor, was also endowed with undeniable artistic gifts. The master enamellist has played on a palette of pink shades with soft, fluffy effects against a background of subtle pearly grey shades lit up by delicate guilloché motifs literally capturing the light in the enamel.

Launched at SIHH 2012, the 'Les Univers Infinis' represented a new addition to the Métiers d'Art series, inspired by the work of the Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. The watches in this collection represent an exceptional alliance between the artistic crafts cultivated by the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin: engraving, enamelling, gemsetting and guilloché work.
Inspired by a drawing by Maurits Cornelis Escher, the dial of the Dove watch features a depiction of doves in flight, sublimated by the prestigious Fine Watchmaking arts: engraving, Grand Feu enamelling, gemsetting and guilloché worked are intertwined like tessellations to form a resplendent décor.
The white gold case is highlighted by a slender bezel ensuring a generous dial opening swept over by elegant hollowed hands. The case frames a work of art born at the hands of four master artisans within the Manufacture.
The engraver begins by drawing the outline of the doves on a yellow gold dial base, before proceeding to “champlever” them, meaning engraving the motif before the enameller fills the cavities thus formed. This meticulous operation calls for infinite precision, since the repetitive symmetry of the drawing cannot tolerate any flaws.
Then comes the turn of the enameller. The infinite range of colours and nuances stems from the various oxides that may be associated with enamel, and of their combinations. It is up to the artisan to create and choose the perfect harmony of the shades which, once bonded by firing in the often, create this radiant violet hue. The enameller completes his task by applying a translucent enamel coating to the violet birds. For their white counterparts, he opts for an opalescent enamel that reveals the engraved motifs and creates a striking depth effect.
Once the enamelling is complete, the gemsetter highlights one of the doves. The diamonds chosen for their lustre and their clarity emphasise the graceful flight of the bird, drawing the gaze towards its crystal-clear luminosity.
Finally, the guillocheur, the master of relief, does his part in accentuating the depth effect of the dial. Due to the extreme difficulty of this process, it is extremely rare for an enamelled piece to be guilloché-worked as a final phase. The expert takes the time required to patiently incise the material and thus create a truly lifelike depiction of the doves....

The reference 86073/000R-8971 Métiers d'Art The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Monkey was introduced in November 2015 in honour of the upcoming Chinese year of the Monkey in 2016. Reference 86073/000P-8972 is similar though in platinum.
Vacheron Constantin is pursuing its dialogue with collectors and passionate devotees of Haute Horlogerie by enriching its Métiers d’Art La légende du zodiaque chinois series with the sign of the monkey. The latter will take over from that of the goat at the Chinese New Year on February 8th 2016. Bearing the Hallmark of Geneva, these two new creations, realised in twelve models each, combine the technical excellence of Caliber 2460 G4 with the beauty of artistic crafts.
China, a nation with which Vacheron Constantin has been cultivating special ties since 1845, first introduce the paper-cutting technique known as Jianzhi, a popular art echoed in Swiss culture through its famous Scherenschnitt paper-cutting. This artistic approach, highlighted in the Métiers d’Art La légende du zodiaque chinois, has been given a fresh interpretation thanks to the expertise of the master engravers and enamellers.
The foliage motif appearing on the dial and based on classic Chinese iconography is etched directly in the metal. The pattern remains semi-embedded and stands out from its gold base by a subtle stagesetting of variously accentuating reliefs creating a depth effect. This makes the vegetation appear to be floating over the dial. Then comes the stage of Grand Feu enamelling, a technique invented in Geneva and that remains the preserve of a very few particularly skilled artisans. By applying the enamel in successive layers, the enamel specialist enhances the intensity of the blue or bronze-toned dial. Achieving the necessary mastery of colour and of reactions to firing at temperatures between 800 and 900 degrees Celsius calls for an expertise that can only be acquired over long years of experience. The monkey, made of platinum or gold, is hand engraved and delicately applied to the dial centre....

Caught between the desire to extend the frontiers of technical possibility and concern over the practical use of this multi-complication movement, Vacheron Constantin’s engineers and watchmakers came up with an original device to regulate the repeater’s chiming rate: a centripetal governor.
The role of this device is to steady the rate at which the hammers strike the gongs of a chiming watch to repeat the hours, quarters and minutes in a series of notes. Without a regulator, the spring-driven strike would come out in a rush of indiscernible notes.
The device developed by Vacheron Constantin goes further than the more traditional strike regulator – a noisy recoil escapement with a lever that is subject to wear.
During the development of the movement for the Tour de l’Ile anniversary watch of 2005, Vacheron Constantin’s engineers and watchmak-ers sought to replace the strike’s escapement governor with a totally silent system that would reduce wear. A centrifugal governor existed, essentially a flywheel with a pair of weights that moved away from the centre as it spun to slow the wheel by increasing its inertia. Nevertheless, true to the tradition of a brand whose motto recalls that it is always possible to do better, Vacheron Constantin’s watchmakers preferred to steer their choice towards a centripetal strike governor.
This device has two weights shaped so as to act as a brake on the governor’s rotating shaft, thus evening-out the energy released by the repeater’s spring. To achieve this, it uses the opposite centrifugal and centripetal forces. When the governor spins, the centrifugal force pivots one end of the weights outwards so that the other end acts as a brake on the central shaft to bring the rotation and the strike to a steady rate. This original and undoubtedly unique device is quite silent. The enthusiast can satisfy his curiosity while marvelling at the spinning governor through the sapphire-crystal caseback.

Geometrical shapes have always inspired the greatest builders, architects and artists, playing with light according to the position of the sun or forming a pyramid of chiaroscuro contrasts based on fundamental geometrical elements arranged in layers. Inspired by these works, Vacheron Constantin has devised an original architectural motif based on the shape of a triangle to provide a unique interpretation of hand engraving. Once again demonstrating the impressive range of their art, the artisans of the Manufacture performed truly stunning work on the surface of the parts composing Calibre 2790 SQ. In a succession of meticulous strokes of the burin that sometimes involves working to the nearest tenth of a millimetre, they have created tiny triangles composed of recurrent straight lines creating a three-dimensional effects, before hand-drawing and chamfering the 246 parts of the calibre. This geometrical mosaic forms an architecture generating an astonishing volume effect through light and shadow effects further enhanced by the airy structure of the imposing tourbillon carriage.

The Malte Tourbillon Openworked was introduced at SIHH 2014. It features a tonneau-shaped case. It is powered by the shaped caliber 2790 SQ movement.
The fascinating construction of Calibre 2790 SQ is framed by a tonneau-shaped platinum case closely following the lines of this exceptional mechanism that also powers a date display and a power-reserve indication. Made in sapphire like the case-back, the dial is rimmed by a slategrey ring featuring elegant metallic hour-markers, while the minute circle is painted and the date, power-reserve and seconds indicators are engraved and inked. The tourbillon carriage at 6 o’clock spins over a Maltese Cross, sweeping the small seconds hand along with it. The Malte tourbillon openworked model bears the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva, the highest benchmark in Fine Watchmaking testifying to the quality, craftsmanship and reliability of an exceptional timepiece crafted within the confines of Canton Geneva....

In 2008 Vacheron Constantin presented the ‘Historiques American 1921’, a piece inspired by an avant-garde cushion-shaped wristwatch featuring a crown placed at 1 o’clock and confidentially produced for an American client during the Roaring Twenties. In keeping with the spirit of that era, Vacheron Constantin has once again returns to creative roots by combining inventive design with rigorous respect for history in this eloquent tribute to the 1920s.
Radiating classic and understated elegance as well as genuine originality, this ultimate ‘dandy-style’ watch faithfully echoes the original with a 40 mm-diameter cushion-shaped case crafted in 18-carat pink gold and distinguished by diagonal time read-off and a crown positioned at 1 o’clock. The sandblasted dial is graced with 12 painted black Arabic numerals arranged around an equally black-painted railway track minute circle. The hands are in black oxidised 18-carat gold. Topped by a slightly convex sapphire crystal, the case is fitted with a transparent back enabling one to admire the exceptional finishing of the mechanical manual-winding Calibre 4400, developed and crafted in-house by Vacheron Constantin and bearing the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it measures 28 mm in diameter, 2.8 mm thick, and is endowed with an approximately 65-hour power reserve. This new model is water-resistant to pressures of 3 bar – equivalent to 30 metres – and is teamed with a hand-sewn saddle-stitched strap in dark brown alligator leather fitted with an 18-carat pink gold pin buckle shaped like a half Maltese Cross....

Its design is a contemporary interpretation of the first water-resistant and anti-magnetic chronograph presented by Vacheron Constantin - the 1955 reference 6087, a 35mm chronograph powered by caliber 492, which was made in yellow gold, pink gold and platinum for a total of 36 examples.
The Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955 ref. 5000H/000P-B058 is powered by caliber 1142, which is Vacheron Constantin's interpretation of the Lemania 2310, a movement that also served as the base for Omega's caliber 321 and Patek Philippe's CH 27-70 family.
The platinum case of the Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955 measures 38.5mm across, a reasonable update from its source of inspiration. The dial features a silvered opaline center with sun-brushed external zone; the latter featuring the minute track and tachymeter scale. The hour markers are made of 18k white gold.

It was in 2009 that Vacheron Constantin decided to create a new minute repeater combining slenderness, a pure sound, aesthetic beauty, reliability and sturdiness. Four years proved necessary to solve this complex equation. While the new Calibre 1731 is barely thicker than its predecessor from 1993 – 3.90 compared with 3.28 mm – due to its impressive 65-hour power reserve, it is nonetheless the thinnest on the market today, having successfully overcome the difficulty of assembling and adjusting parts that have been slimmed down to extremes. Nor are the technical feats confined to the ultra-thin side of its nature, since Calibre 1731 is equipped with a highly ingenious device developed by Vacheron Constantin in 2007 for the 2755 movement – another member of this exclusive family of minute repeater calibres: a flying strike governor. Contrary to classic lever-type governors, this one is completely silent. Its role is to steady the rate at which the hammers strike the gongs. Without a regulator or governor, this musical sequence would take place at the speed of the striking barrel-spring, and would merely produce a rush of indiscernible notes. The device developed by Vacheron Constantin comprises two inertia-blocks or weights designed to act as a brake on the rotating shaft of the governor and thus evening out the energy supplied by the barrel spring. To achieve this, it makes use of two opposing centrifugal and centripetal forces. When the governor spins, the centrifugal force pivots one end of the weights outwards so that the other end presses on the shaft so as to stabilise the rotation speed and thus ensure a steady cadence. Perfectly finished right down to the smallest details, the governor bears Vacheron Constantin’s Maltese Cross emblem, even though the latter cannot be seen from the front of the calibre.

The creation of striking watches – known to be the most difficult complications to produce – is an art mastered by very few watchmakers. For more than two centuries, the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin has been creating an array of splendid striking watches. In 2013, the Maison unveiled a true masterpiece of virtuosity in which the complexity of the striking mechanism was matched by the additional challenge of creating the thinnest hand-wound calibre and the thinnest hand-wound minute repeater watch on the market, at respectively 3.9 and 8.1 mm thick. Initially introduced in 18K 5N pink gold, at Watches & Wonders 2015 this timepiece appeared clothed in a platinum case – framing a silvered opaline or slate-colored opaline dial – naturally bearing the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva.
Particular care was devoted to the acoustics of the Patrimony ultra-thin calibre 1731, since the sound of a striking watch is its very reason for being. Various technical choices were made to ensure a crystalclear and perfectly tuneful tone. Part of the second series of the Les Univers Infinis collection, inspired by the work of the Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, the 'Lizard' was introduced in 2013. The collection displays a blend of the Artistic Crafts cultivated by the Geneva-based manufacture: engraving, enamelling, gemsetting, guilloché work and the new technique of gold and mother-of-pearl marquetry.
Red, brown, gem-set or silver-toned, the lizards take over the dial to create a captivatingly animated effect. Inspired by one of the Dutch artist’s lithographs named Reptiles, the watch springs to life beneath the
intermingled effect of four ancestral decorative arts.
The engraver begins his work by hollowing out the motifs from a yellow gold base. The enameler then fills in
the lizards heading southwards with a taupe-colored enamel, while those going west are coated in crimson red.

The collection displays a blend of the Artistic Crafts cultivated by the Geneva-based manufacture: engraving, enamelling, gemsetting, guilloché work and the new technique of gold and mother-of-pearl marquetry.
On the dial of the 'Angel Watch', angels and demons face off in a contrast that is both symbolic and aesthetic. The former are in light, the latter in darkness, yet neither side appears to prevail over the other. Inspired by research conducted by Maurits Cornelis Escher on the “circular boundary” – involving décor composed of infinitely multiplied elements radiating out from a central point – the watch portrays these respective figures through a subtle combination of the arts of engraving, enamelling and guilloché work, skilfully playing on depth and shimmering mirror-like effects.
Working with a white gold base, the engraver first traces the outlines of the figures and then hollows them out as cells using the champlevé technique. Next comes the copperplate engraving that defines the details of the demons. The enameller fills the cavities thus hollowed out, an operation requiring infinite precision in that the
repetitive symmetry of the pattern simply cannot tolerate even the tiniest flaw. After several firings in the kiln,
during which the grey and blue colours are progressively set in place, the artisan applies a final layer of
translucent enamel to the imps in order to accentuate the depth of the engraved motifs. The guillocheur then
moves into action to craft the angel robes and wings by patiently incising the colourful material. It is extremely
rare that guilloché work on an enamelled model is done as the last phase, precisely due to the extreme
complexity of such an operation, since any slip of the tool could jeopardise the precious work of an entire team
of artisans....

At the occasion of the SIAR 2013 Gala dinner and auction, orchestrated by Sotheby’s, Vacheron Constantin created a unique Patrimony Traditionelle World Time. On the night of October 2, 2013, the gala dinner Sotheby's SIAR was held at the Casa del Lago, where renowned people of the Mexican society, as well as, domestic and foreign journalists were honored to witness the auction of the unique piece Patrimony Traditionnelle World Time INAH edition. This auction was intended to appeal to all those present to support and promote the recovery of the national heritage of all Mexicans. The proceeds of the auction were donated entirely to the INAH.
This unique piece especially made for the occasion represents the combination of technical skills and aesthetic taste cultivated by Vacheron Constantin. The complications of the World Time with the 37 time zones strengthens the technical excellence and creative spirit that has guided the Maison for more than 250 years. Vacheron Constantin signed an agreement in 2012 with the National Museum of History "Castillo de Chapultepec" through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
